GentleMinions: Why Are There So Many Noisy Children Watching Minions While Wearing Suits?

                           MINIONS:THE RISE OF GRU

So-called GentleMinions, boisterous young guys dressed in suits, have attended screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru. The fifth installment of the Despicable Me series, Minions 2, continues to be popular with audiences. Families celebrated the holiday by going to the movies, and as a result, the film broke box office records for the July 4th weekend, earning over $127 million domestically. These families weren't alone, though, as these formally attired GentleMinions joined them.

It should come as no surprise that the GentleMinions fad started on social media, and footage of the phenomenon went viral over the long Fourth of July weekend. They show young males entering movie theaters dressed to the nines to Yeat's "Rich Minion," and then they raucously applaud the Illumination Studios logo and the Minions: The Rise of Gru credits. The Minions are a common social media presence, popular with both young and old people, and used by both sides of the cultural war in memes. The phrase "The GentleMinions," which was coined by the Minions' official TikTok account, is their most recent contribution to social media and has equally thrilled, upset, and perplexed commentators and theatergoers.

Over the Fourth of July holiday, a UK theater chain experienced such a response to the GentleMinions meme.
